Hey y’all, I’m working to rally all my fellow Houston hippie gardeners, to provide a regular supply of green growing joy, and since I work at The Yellow Cup on Washington ave,(and my boss wants us to “cultivate community” -his words- on his behalf) I figured why not make the cafe the city’s central meeting place for our local underground plant trade?
I’m not entirely sure if boss is cool with it- he’s “admittedly conservative” - so we have to be legit underground. But I’m more than willing to get fired by a capitalist for gifting plant joy ;)
Until further notice, the code word is “Lantanas like Santana” If we have plants, we’ll let you know; if it’s not a good time, ”the monstera is under the bed”
feel free to make requests here and we can work out meetups, or folks are welcome to come trade at the shop, Drop them off for later pickup, or meet new peeps in the safety of our security cameras and conveniently located police state.
some comrades and I are trying to put together pop shops to stave off the dine-in super spreader culture, so if anyone (artists, bakers, makers, entrepreneurs, yogis, growers, etc) wants to collaborate a showcase day, please reach out!
im willing to make pickup/deliveries for anyone without easy transportation or just generally lacking the time/effort/motivation to bring a plant in or pick a plant up. I already drive For Uber which is painfully unfulfilling; please give me a greater purpose for driving all over the city - atascocita to sugarland; Pasadena to katy.
before I go, I wanna thank everyone on here for making the effort to (read this goddamn novel of a post) enjoy plant life while we can, and spread the joy. Thanks to dj freedem for making this space for us; thanks for giving poor white hippies like me an achievable way to show our willingness to do something about this collective trauma and the bullshitshit we don’t even know we benefit from (yet); thanks to everyone for (normalizing) asking for what is needed and holding onto hope when the world feels so damned bleak. Let’s plant something forward and grow a greener future together! Okay, I’m done with the soap box now :D
Number one I looove your post!! It was as so enjoyable to read and believe this is a beautiful way to gift plant joy! It is so awesome for you to take initiative and organize something like this and put out a call to action! The world needs more people like you! I’m not in Houston but God I wish I was after reading your post! If you guys ever are open to shipping plant kids, I would love to be on the list, like ASA. Lol God Bless you!
I wish we could ship plants all over. I grew up in a rural area that was a few hours from most major cities like Houston, and feel for folks who dont have the access to city communities like I do now here. The primary issue is one of funding - we are a network of baristas and service workers living paycheck to paycheck, hand to mouth, off people’s tips, and plants are our primary outlet because they’re cheap and often free! But we care about connecting and sharing this happiness, and doing the work it takes to take responsibility for repairing what we know is broken in our society. Eventually I would like to try to find funding for shipping plants; whether I happen to be able to for personal financial improvements in the future or maybe a go fund me, or maybe I can get creative some other way, but I gotta be honest; 2020 has gotten to me, and this is about all I can handle committing to right now. But I will say that if anyone would like to DM me their address; I will save it for when I can do more, or find folks who can do more than I can, and you might get a surprise plant in the mail someday, but no promises.
We’ve got some succulents and petinias In the shop right now, more monstera on the way!!! Go check it out and take what you like!!
looking a monstera or fiddle leaf fig
My monstera momma is going to take a cutting for you this week :)
I’ll see if I can find a friend with a fiddle leaf for you too.
Love the post. I’m looking for a natal mahogany, Boston fern, and club moss
We have a monstera in the shop for you!
Ooh ok. I’ll come by and get it. Thanks
I don’t have any of those but I’ll see what I can find. Right now we have monstera and purple sweet potato bine cuttings.
Would love the monstera if it is still available.
I would live a monstera
Love this!!! and any good indoor plants I will gladly accept :)
So whatever is in the store is what we have for everyone At that time. Rright now between three gardeners we produce about one plant every other week, but sometimes folks clean us out in a day. just keep that in mind when y’all pick up whatever you’d like. Folks are welcome to come back later if we don’t have what you want, or if you want more Plants than we have. We dont really have the capacity to save any plants for anyone in particular.
Thank you for making this post! I am also looking for monsters or any pretty indoor plants. Pothos are my jam!! Snake or a majesty plants as well. Willing to travel.
Hello, my name is Des. I’m in the museum district, HTX. Looking for any medium to low light indoor plants. :-)
This is too dope! I’m near Buffalo bayou and your coffee shop is super close!! I just started my horticulture journey and I’d love any type of monstera-especially adansonii, string of (anything), and Hoya carnosa 😍
Also, just double check... are y’all still doing this? And who should we ask for when we come in/ call in for the plants?
Yes! There are still 2-3 baristas in on this working there, and the code word is “the Lantanas like Santana.” if you say that to them and they’re one of our comrades they’ll offer your which plants we have that day. If they’re confused it was one of the newbies or the owner who doesn’t know about it. We’re legit underground.
if there are monsteras in the topo Chico bottles in the windows they are definitely up for grabs - no need to code word confirm, just snag one discretely on your way out - no one will stop you. But I get it if this feels sketchy; you can dm me to set up a meet time and I’ll coordinate the plants-fer.
I'll DM you because I feel weird doing a grab and go 😂 especially during a pandemic lol
